Animal House

This page provides glimpses of many creatures I've seen in the 2 years I've spent hanging around the area. I've seen more animals in this area than in all the time I've spent hiking in these mountains... and backpacking the Colorado Trail.

With the addition of new life on the property and the landing of strawbales (home for small critters), a 2nd badger hole has been dug. I expect that we can co-habitate in peace and that the rodents will be enoough to keep him, or her, fat and happy!

Sometimes I find 4 legged animals easier to live with :o)  When I'm backpacking, the least of my fears are from animals... maybe by the time the strawbales become walls, the rodents won't have such a large playground, or nursery, around the bales and the badgers will hunt for a new residence.

Sightings...
While staying with a friend we were called by a neighbor to look outside. A black bear and her cub were hightailing it out of the yard, across the road and up onto the hillside. It took too long to get the camera and snap pictures... I had to zoom in too much, and the light was going.

Hummers

I've seen a pair of golden eagles perched on the top of a nearby tree, large ravens, Lots of bluebirds, blue and gray jay's, and other dirt-colored ones known locally as "suicide birds". They hang out on the dirt roads and fly off in front of your car at the very last possible minute! I suspect they are female bluebirds, but I've been told I'm not correct on that. Both are often seen together in large groups.

We also have a very large contingent of hummingbirds, that receives organic sugar water. I'm getting to recongnize these very interesting birds, by variations in color, patterns and size. Each has a slightly different tone that their wing-beat makes, and vocal sounds as they fly around.
I watched one repeatedly zoom up very high and then dive-bomb the area around the feeder. An aggressive move to keep the others away from the feeder.

There are numerous burrows on the property. One or two relatively large "rodents" have made a couple of burrows. I suspect it's a badger. A ground squirrel was seen going into it, but it's obvious that a much larger animal is inhabiting it. The hole and excavation tailings have grown larger and the bones of a rodent were tossed about outside the burrow. I'm collecting bones, ala Georgia O'Keefe. One hole was recently dug near the strawbale stack. It's going to be an interesting spring!

This past fall I saw a badger twice... within a half mile from the property.
I've seen, and heard, coyotes.
A vulture standing in the middle of a dirt road.

Twice I've seen a bobcat.
I've not seen mountain lions yet, at least not here.
